An Extra Bone!

April 7, 2015

For a couple of months, Addison has been toe walking on her left foot.  When I asked her about it she said it hurt to walk on it flat.  After a couple of weeks I took her to our doctor who ordered x-rays.  The final report said there was "disuse osteopenia".  Basically the bone was becoming weak because of her not bearing full weight on it.  He ordered an MRI and after that I scheduled an appointment with a pediatric orthopod in Provo who is associated with Primary Children's Hospital.  The MRI result came back with a "Type II Navicular Accessory".  Meaning an extra bone growing off her navicular bone.

At her appointment the doctor recommended surgery to remove the offending bone and the morning of the 7th we were bright and early at outpatient surgery in Provo.

Don't let the sad face fool you - she really was excited to get it taken care of and most of all - to get a cast!

They had her mark the right foot which in this case was her left one!

Knowing she would be missing school for possibly the rest of the week, she had brought homework to get started on.  Knowing that she would probably be a little miserable for a few days, I had her start on it to pass the time while waiting to go back for surgery!

After some homework - she watched a little bit of TV, but not for long.  She didn't really want to watch.

Getting wheeled back for surgery!

Anticipating being put to sleep!

I talked to both the doctor and anesthesiologist before the surgery that she would probably have a very sensitive stomach to the medications.  They said they would treat her more aggressively.  I think they should have listened to me better - the amount of meds they gave was still just a pittance to what she really needed.  The nurses said how nauseated she was and having trouble in the PACU.  They said they were giving her more meds and still were surprised at how sick she was.  Poor girl!  She was still sick several days later and after talking to one of the physicians at the hospital he thought she might have an ileus - basically part of her gut was still asleep.  I restricted her to ice chips for a day and slowly started her back on clears and she seemed to do a lot better.

 The offending culprit!

She got her cast!  She really has done well with it.  She has hopped all over the house and become a pro at crutches to the point that several teachers and her principle have remarked at how well she gets around.  She really is one tough girl!
